Hi, I am the Senior Designer for Harlequin. We are a company that is
mainly pattern book based, like the majority of the upmarket sector of
the furnishing industry.
A pattern book allows us to distribute our collections throughout the uk
and abroad to our interior furnishing retailers. The pattern book is a
show case for our designs and shows the collections as a whole to our
customers. Samples can then be sent to individual customers having
selecting  from the patten book.
With in our pattern books the photography  is essential and we spend a
lot of time  and money styling our collections to help to illustrate to
the customer how to use the fabrics and papers.
Obviously we can only illustrate a small section of the product in our
pattern books, but a pattern book  shows the exact colour/ cloth and
substrate. Hopefully the retailer would advise to sample from the
pattern book to take home and place in their own room, as light can
effect the colour. So it is always best to see how the item looks in
your own environment.  A pattern book can inspire a customer, interior
designer and then one would hope they would purchase from it. We are a
very successful business and so I would definitely agree that the
pattern book is a crucial part of a customers purchasing journey.
Hopefully this info helps answers the questions to your survey.

Many thanks
Louise Draper

Fabric book questions

To Teresa,

Another student, Georgina, and myself, visited the showroom at Chelsea Harbour at the end of trade on 8th November inquiring as to whether you could answer some questions for our research into the future of pattern books, to which we were given your card to forward on the questions to yourself.

We are currently in our final year of university studying Fashion Communication and Promotion at Nottingham Trent University. For our first research module we are looking at the role of pattern/ fabric swatch books in the fashion and interior industries, and what the future may be for them.

I wondered if you had a few moments to spare to answer these five short questions. Any response would be greatly appreciated!

1. What are the advantages of using pattern books?

2. What are the disadvantages of using pattern books?

3. Do you feel there is a future for pattern books? If so, what changes might there be?

4. Do you feel pattern books are a crucial part of the consumer purchasing journey?

5. Do you feel pattern books fully show-off and display a collection appropriately?

The information you give me will be used in support of my work and may be written up in my project/dissertation. Anything you say will be treated with the strictest confidence and your contribution to the discussion will not attribute you as an individual. What you say will be used for illustration only; to reinforce points that I make
Many thanks in advance!
