Hi there
For one of my dissertations, my team and I are doing a live project with a company that creates pattern books for interior design showrooms etc. As an initial starting point, we want to ask as many people as possible to answer the questions below.
Your answers are strictly confidential and will only be used as initial research. Your name will not be used in the report at all.
If you have any questions, please ask.
Thank you in advance!

1. What's your starting point for redecorating/designing a room? Where
do you get your inspiration from? (e.g.magazines, a designer, blog)
Starting
point for me is always the atmosphere I want to create in the room,
i.e. light and airy, warm and cosy. From there I would go for a style I
like (well, I like many styles but one has to make a decisions on some
time!). For general information, magazines are initially a good
source as is Printerest which has some good photos forstyling.
However when it comes down to the nitty gritty then visiting shops and browsing through the fabric and wallpaper books is a must as it’s the real thing, you can touch it, see it in daylight etc.
However when it comes down to the nitty gritty then visiting shops and browsing through the fabric and wallpaper books is a must as it’s the real thing, you can touch it, see it in daylight etc.
2. What would be your main reason for redecorating/designing?
Refreshing
a tired-looking room. I’m usually too busy doing the things that I’m
interested in and spending time with friends to revolve my life around
decorating, so my house gets very, very tired before I decide I really
must do something about the decorating. I don’t tend to bend to the
latest trends in décor and design. As long as the house is clean
that is a good status quo for me and would lean towards spending the money
seeing a new part of the country or visiting the theatre with friends and
forgoing the new curtains. However, I realize I’m probably not
typical. However, when I do tackle it, I am fully-focused.
3. Describe your taste in 4 words.
Interesting
question that puts me on the spot. Never thought about this before
so here goes…eclectic; tactile; not at all minimal but hopefully considered;
bordering on provincial French/Italian as a preference of style.
4. Whats your job role?
Now retired,
just.
5. What are the top 3 things that you spend your disposable income
on?
Travelling,
making art and textiles (with might includes courses) and clothes
6. How much would you be prepared to spend on a pair of curtains?
£1-50 £51-100 £200+
£200+ (but if the fabric is what I want to fit the theme then I’m more than
happy if they are less than that…but they rarely are!)
7. What have you bought for your home in the last month?
Lots
of garden bits. Specifically for the house… table ceramics and table
linen.
7a) Was it a necessity/impluse purchase?
Impluse!
I love setting an attractive table when friends come to dine.
8. Who lives with you? Age/Gender etc.
My husband. A young 70!

1. When you say, where would you start, do you mean physically,
e.g the wall, or the floor? I get my inspiration (not the word I’d use for my
décor!) from photos in magazines and newspaper supplements ( and that’s where
it stays).
2. I would redecorate when it gets beyond too shabby, or I can
no longer stand being in the room

most of my shopping in John Lewis’ ( easy to get too, and it is rarely cheap.
So I think the last time I bought curtains there, for my bay window, they cost
around £200 ( and I don’t like them much, but I couldn’t afford the ones I
really liked). Also, I like to support British manufacturers, and cheaper
outlets appear to be all foreign imports.
